Cambridge AS & A Level Chemistry 9701: what the course covers

Cambridge AS & A Level Chemistry 9701 is thirty-seven syllabus topics in two halves. AS Level Chemistry is topics 1 to 22 - the physical chemistry of atomic structure, atoms molecules and stoichiometry, chemical bonding, states of matter, chemical energetics, electrochemistry, equilibria and reaction kinetics; the inorganic chemistry of the Periodic Table, Group 2, Group 17, and nitrogen and sulfur; the whole of AS organic chemistry from hydrocarbons to polymerisation and organic synthesis; and analytical techniques. A Level Chemistry is those twenty-two topics plus topics 23 to 37, which take energetics, electrochemistry, equilibria and reaction kinetics further, add the chemistry of the transition elements, and extend the organic chemistry to the A Level hydrocarbons including arenes, halogen compounds, hydroxy compounds, carboxylic acids and derivatives, nitrogen compounds, polymerisation, organic synthesis and analytical techniques.

Every topic sits in one of four strands - Physical chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry and Analysis - and every revision page on this site sits in one of them, in Cambridge's own order. AS Level candidates study the first half and sit three papers; A Level candidates study all of it and sit five.

RoutePapers you sitGrades open to youWhat it means
AS Level onlyPapers 1, 2 and 3grades a to eFor candidates taking the AS Level on its own. All three AS components must be taken in the same exam series: Cambridge allows no staged AS Level.
A Level, staged over two yearsPapers 1, 2 and 3 in the first year, Papers 4 and 5 in the secondgrades A* to EThe usual A Level route. You take the three AS components in your first year and carry the AS result forward, subject to Cambridge's carry-forward rules and time limits, then complete Papers 4 and 5 in your second year.
A Level in one exam seriesPapers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5grades A* to EAll five components taken in the same series, for candidates who did not sit a staged AS Level.

The five papers

Paper 1 is 31% of the AS Level and 15.5% of the A Level; Paper 2 is 46% of the AS Level and 23% of the A Level; Paper 3 is 23% of the AS Level and 11.5% of the A Level; Paper 4 is 38.5% of the A Level; and Paper 5 is 11.5% of the A Level.

PaperTimeMarksWhat it tests
Paper 1 - Multiple Choice1 h 15 min40 marks40 four-option multiple-choice questions on the AS Level content. AO1 and AO2.
Paper 2 - AS Level Structured Questions1 h 15 min60 marksStructured questions on the AS Level content. AO1 and AO2.
Paper 3 - Advanced Practical Skills2 h40 marksPractical test. AO3.
Paper 4 - A Level Structured Questions2 h100 marksStructured questions on the A Level content; AS knowledge is assumed. AO1 and AO2.
Paper 5 - Planning, Analysis and Evaluation1 h 15 min30 marksStructured questions on planning, analysis and evaluation. AO3.

How the marks are weighted

The 40 / 40 / 20 split is the same at AS Level and at A Level. Inside the components it is an even split: Papers 1, 2 and 4 are 50% AO1 and 50% AO2, while the two experimental-skills papers, Papers 3 and 5, are 100% AO3. Every question on this site's chemistry pages is tagged AO1, AO2 or AO3, so you can see which one you are practising.

The full topic list, with every topic linked to its revision page, is on the AS & A Level Chemistry syllabus page. Work through the areas below in order, or jump straight to what you need tonight.

Area 2

A Level Content

Topics 23-37 - the A Level treatment of energetics, electrochemistry, equilibria and kinetics, the chemistry of the transition elements, and the A Level organic chemistry of arenes, acid derivatives, amines, azo dyes, condensation polymers, synthesis and spectroscopy.

Exam practice

The part that turns knowing into marks

Knowing the content and scoring marks are two different skills. These tools train the second one.

Command words

Every command word Cambridge uses, what it actually means, and what the examiner wants to see. Includes a trainer that shows you the difference between a 1-mark and a 2-mark answer to the same question.

Why students lose marks

Real student answers that score badly, the exact reason each one loses marks, and the version that scores. This is where most marks are quietly thrown away.
