Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620: what the course covers

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 is twelve syllabus topics, studied in this order: 1 States of matter, 2 Atoms, elements and compounds, 3 Stoichiometry, 4 Electrochemistry, 5 Chemical energetics, 6 Chemical reactions, 7 Acids, bases and salts, 8 The Periodic Table, 9 Metals, 10 Chemistry of the environment, 11 Organic chemistry and 12 Experimental techniques and chemical analysis. Every one of them has its own revision page on this site, in Cambridge's own order.

All candidates take three components, and which three depends on the route your school enters you for. The route also sets the highest grade you can be awarded, so it is worth knowing which one you are on before you revise.

RoutePapers you sitGrades open to youWhat it means
CorePapers 1, 3 and 5 or 6grades C to GFor candidates who have studied the Core syllabus content, or who are expected to achieve a grade D or below. Paper 1 is multiple choice on the Core content only, Paper 3 is short-answer and structured questions on the Core content, and the practical paper is Paper 5 or Paper 6.
ExtendedPapers 2, 4 and 5 or 6grades A* to GFor candidates who have studied the Extended syllabus content - the Core and the Supplement together - or who are expected to achieve a grade C or above. The same three components as the Core route, examined on the Core and Supplement content together.

The three papers

Paper 1 or Paper 2 is 30% of the qualification, Paper 3 or Paper 4 is 50%, and the practical paper is 20%.

How the marks are weighted

Within the written papers the split is 63% AO1 to 37% AO2, in both the multiple-choice papers and the theory papers; the practical paper is 100% AO3. Every question on this site's IGCSE Chemistry pages is tagged AO1, AO2 or AO3, so you can see which one you are practising.
